How Do Plumbers Get Leads Without Angi?

Ask Vincent: marketplaces rent you an introduction, not a customer. The three unpaid channels that compound, and why the third decides the other two.

The plumbers I know who got off the lead marketplaces did it with three things: a complete Google Business Profile, a deliberate review habit, and a website that answers a homeowner in ten seconds. Those three feed each other. Bought leads do not feed anything — you stop paying, they stop arriving, and nothing you built remains.

I want to be straight about why lead marketplaces work as well as they do, because pretending they are useless helps nobody.

They solve the hardest problem in a young trade business: demand you did not have to earn. You put in a card, work appears. For a plumber in year one with an empty calendar, that is not a scam, it is oxygen.

What people underestimate is what the arrangement does over five years.

The part that costs more than the fee

A marketplace lead is shared. Three or four plumbers get the same homeowner within a minute of each other, which means the job goes to whoever calls fastest or quotes lowest, and often both. You did not choose to compete that way. The format chose for you.

Then there is the compounding you never get. A customer who found you through a marketplace learned the marketplace's name, not yours. Next time the water heater goes, they open the app again. You did not acquire a customer, you rented an introduction, and the rent comes due every month forever.

That is not marketing. That is a tax.

Meanwhile the plumber down the road who spent that same money on nothing at all — who instead filled out his Google profile properly, asked every happy customer for a review, and fixed the top of his website — owns all of it. His profile ranks. His reviews accumulate. His site converts. None of it switches off when he stops paying, because he was never paying.

So what should you actually do?

Keep the marketplace on while you need it. Turning it off before there is anything underneath is how plumbers end up in trouble. But build the three underneath, starting now.

Google Business Profile, completely filled in. Service areas, hours, categories, and photos of your own work. Highest-return unpaid hour there is.

Reviews, asked for by name, on the day. In the driveway when the job is done and they are relieved — not by email on Thursday.

A first screen that answers. This is the one that decides whether the first two convert into phone calls, and it is the one most plumbers never touch.

That last one used to mean hiring somebody. Designer Talk is an AI page builder that lets you build WordPress pages by describing them in plain English — no drag-and-drop, no design skills.

Get started with Designer Talk today — the first prompt takes a minute.

Open Brand Settings first and set your colors and font once.

Step 1 · Build it
create a hero section for a plumbing company that does drains water heaters and leaks, same day service, with the towns we cover, a book now button and a tappable phone number

Photos are a separate step. Hit + in the section chat, choose Generate Image:

Step 2 · Generate the photo
a clean basement utility area with new copper pipes and a water heater, warm light, no people

Click Insert, use it as the hero background, then keep talking:

Step 3 · Then just talk to it
Make the phone number bigger and tappable.
Add a line saying we answer nights and weekends.
Put the service area under the headline.

Do that and the marketplace becomes a choice instead of the plan. That is the entire goal.
