Free roofing leads are not free — they cost you time instead of money. The three that actually work are a complete Google Business Profile, a website that answers a homeowner in ten seconds, and asking past customers for reviews on purpose. All three are unpaid, all three compound, and none of them stop working when you stop paying.
Every roofer who asks me this is really asking a different question. They are asking whether there is a way out of the lead treadmill. There is. It is just slower than a credit card, which is why most people never do it.
Here is what actually generates roofing work without an invoice attached.
The three that work
Your Google Business Profile, filled out completely. Not claimed — filled out. Service area, hours, phone, the categories that match what you do, and photos of your own finished roofs. This is the single highest-return unpaid hour in the trade, and most roofers do half of it and stop. When somebody types roofer near me, this is the thing being ranked.
Reviews, asked for on purpose. Not hoped for. Asked for, by name, the day the job finishes, while the homeowner is standing in the driveway happy. A roofer with a habit here pulls ahead of one without it inside a year, and it costs nothing but the nerve to ask.
A website that answers the question in ten seconds. This is the one that gets skipped, and it is the one that decides whether the first two convert. Google sends somebody to you, they land, and the page opens with a stock photo and Quality You Can Trust Since 1998. It does not say which towns you cover. It does not say you are licensed and insured. The phone number is grey, in the footer, and not tappable.
So they leave. You got the free lead. You just could not hold it.
That is the part that stings, because it means the leads you are buying and the leads you are earning are dying at the same door. Fix the door and both get better at once.
So what should you actually do?
Do the Google profile this week — it is an hour. Start asking for reviews on the next job you finish. And rebuild the top of your website so it answers a homeowner before they scroll.
That last one used to mean hiring somebody. It does not any more. Designer Talk is an AI page builder that lets you build WordPress pages by describing them in plain English — no drag-and-drop, no design skills.

Open Brand Settings first and set your colors and font once, so every section comes out matching.
create a hero section for a roofing company in springfield missouri that does storm damage repair and roof replacement, with the towns we serve, a free inspection button and the phone number
Photos are a separate step. Hit + in the section chat, choose Generate Image:
a clean new shingle roof seen from the yard of a suburban home, early evening light, no people
Click Insert, tell the section to use it as the hero background, then talk to it:
Make the phone number bigger and tappable.
Say we handle insurance claims.
List Springfield, Nixa and Ozark as our service area.
If you have photos of roofs you actually installed, use those instead of a generated one. Click +, upload, Insert. A roof from your own street beats a stock house every time.
Describe the top of your page the way you’d say it in a driveway — on a WordPress site you own.
